Athens: day one

Lundi 17 fév­ri­er, premi­er jour du volet athéni­en de Slash, ce pro­gramme de form­a­tion initié par Trempo. Avec l’Acropole en toile de fond et le salon MIL en ligne de mire.

À cause de Den­nis, Ciara et Inès, com­pli­qué de réunir Marta, Simone, Alice, Joanna et Mar­tin. Les premi­ers, ce sont les noms don­nés aux tem­pêtes qui secouent suc­cess­ive­ment l’Europe depuis une dizaine de jours. Les deux­ièmes, ce sont les prénoms des cinq artistes sélec­tion­nés par Trempo dans le cadre du pro­gramme de form­a­tion Slash. Rassemblés une première fois à Nantes du 26/11/2019 au 06/12/2019, les cinq musi­ciens doivent se ret­rouver cette semaine à Athènes pour la suite du dis­pos­i­tif européen : Simone Tang et Mar­tin Balt­ser en proven­ance d’Aarhus (Dane­mark), Alice Hubble au départ de Lon­dres (GB), Joanna Rives de Bor­deaux (France) et Marta Cas­cales Alimbau de Bar­celone (Espagne). À cinq minutes près, les deux Danois ont failli ne pas décoller, mésaven­ture arrivée à Joanna, qui ne peut rejoindre la bande que 24 heures plus tard. Alice, pour sa part, est excusée ; elle se produisait dimanche en première partie de Damo Suzuki, ancien membre du myth­ique groupe de krautrock Can.

Une grasse mât­inée et quelques por­tions de yahourt grec plus tard, Chloé Nataf, en charge du pro­gramme pour le compte de Trempo, déroule le menu de la semaine. Sur la ter­rasse ensoleillée de l’Hôtel Ori­on, avec vue sur le majes­tueux Acro­pole, elle présente les divers inter­ven­ants aux artistes. Hans-Paul Landriève, cofond­ateur du Stu­dio Volume, offi­ci­era en tant que com­munity man­ager. Gregg Bréh­in, membre du col­lec­tif Yodel, s’occupera de la dir­ec­tion artistique. Sylvain Chant­al, journ­al­iste, effec­tuera quant à lui des séances indi­vidu­elles de media train­ing. L’objectif : pré­parer le MIL, salon pro­fes­sion­nel qui se tiendra à Lis­bonne du 25 au 27 mars 2020, où les cinq musi­ciens se ret­rouveront pour la dernière partie de Slash.

Les trois artistes présents en ce lundi 17 fév­ri­er dis­posent de con­tenus con­crets à val­or­iser. Mar­tin sort un single en avril, Simone un en mai. Quant à Marta, elle pub­lie ce vendredi le clip de Cor­ales, un mor­ceau au piano sur lequel a posé sa voix la chanteuse bar­celon­aise Carla Gimeno, con­nue en Espagne sous le nom de Grauwi. On trav­aillera donc sur le com­mu­niqué de presse qui accom­pag­n­era cette paru­tion. Prati­quant le piano depuis l’enfance, Marta a su dès sa première leçon à l’âge de 11 ans qu’elle se des­tin­erait à la musique. Après avoir auto-édité un premi­er disque, Pirou­ette (2014), elle a sorti un EP, Light-house (2018). Son album de piano solo doit sortir en mai, mais avec Cor­ales elle s’offre une par­enthèse enchantée. « Ce mor­ceau exis­tait déjà, sous le nom de Con­tigo, mais Carla m’a pro­posé des paroles. C’est la première fois de ma car­rière que j’accompagnais de mots un mor­ceau. Cela s’est fait de man­ière très naturelle et on a décidé de l’enregistrer. » Ce test ne con­stitue pas pour autant un change­ment de dir­ec­tion dans la car­rière de la musi­cienne de 27 ans. « Pour l’instant, nous expéri­mentons. J’aime beau­c­oup mettre le piano en dia­logue avec d’autres choses. Je trav­aille d’ailleurs sur un autre thème avec du chant. » En attend­ant, c’est sur son com­mu­niqué de presse qu’elle doit trav­ailler. Plein de choses à changer… Com­ment on dit « Au boulot » en grec ?

Monday the 17^th of Feb­ru­ary, first day of the Atheni­an part of Slash, the train­ing pro­gram ini­ti­ated by Trempo. With the Acro­pol­is as a back­drop and the MIL show in the spotlight.

Because of Den­nis, Ciara and Inès, it was dif­fi­cult to get Marta, Simone, Alice, Joanna and Mar­tin togeth­er. The first are the names giv­en to the storms that have been shak­ing Europe suc­cess­ively for the past ten days. The second is the first names of the five artists selec­ted by Trempo as part of the Slash train­ing pro­gram. Gathered for the first time in Nantes from 26/11/2019 to 06/12/2019, the five musi­cians are due to meet again this week in Athens for the con­tinu­ation of the European scheme: Simone Tang and Mar­tin Balt­ser from Aar­hus (Den­mark), Alice Hubble from Lon­don (UK), Joanna Rives from Bor­deaux (France) and Marta Cas­cales Alimbau from Bar­celona (Spain). The two Danes almost did­n’t take off five minutes apart, a mis­ad­ven­ture that befell Joanna, who was unable to join the group until 24 hours later. Alice, for her part, is excused; she was per­form­ing on Sunday as an open­ing act for Damo Suzuki, a former mem­ber of the myth­ic­al krautrock band Can.

A late morn­ing snack and a few por­tions of Greek yogurt later, Chloé Nataf, in charge of the pro­gram, unfolds the menu for the week. On the sunny ter­race of the Hotel Ori­on, over­look­ing the majest­ic Acro­pol­is, she intro­duces the vari­ous lec­tur­ers to the artists. Hans-Paul Landriève, co-founder of Stu­dio Volume, will act as com­munity man­ager. Gregg Bréh­in, a mem­ber of the Yodel col­lect­ive, will take care of the artist­ic dir­ec­tion. Sylvain Chant­al, a journ­al­ist, will provide indi­vidu­al media train­ing ses­sions. The object­ive: pre­par­ing the MIL, a show­cases fest­iv­al planed in Lis­bon from 25 to 27 March 2020, where the five musi­cians will meet for the final part of Slash.

The three artists present on Monday the 17^th of Feb­ru­ary have con­crete con­tents to pro­mote. Mar­tin will release a single in April, Simone one in May. As Marta, she is releas­ing the video clip of Cor­ales on Fri­day, a piano piece on which the Bar­celona sing­er Carla Gimeno, known in Spain as Grauwi, has placed her voice. We are going to work on the press release that will accom­pany this release. Hav­ing played the piano since child­hood, Marta knew from her first les­son at the age of 11 that she was destined for music. After self-pub­lish­ing a first record, Pirou­ette (2014), she released an EP, Light-house (2018). Her solo piano album is due to be released in May, but with Cor­ales she offers her­self an enchant­ing inter­lude. « This track already exis­ted, under the name Con­tigo, but Carla offered me some lyr­ics. It’s the first time in my career that I accom­pan­ied a piece with words. It was a very nat­ur­al thing to do and we decided to record it. » This test does not con­sti­tute a change of dir­ec­tion in the 27-year-old musi­cian’s career. « For the moment, we’re exper­i­ment­ing. I really enjoy put­ting the piano in dia­logue with oth­er things. I’m also work­ing on anoth­er theme with vocals. » In the mean­time, she has to work on her press release.
